Call to Action!
Dear PEF Members:
The House version of the Surface Transportation Authorization (STA) includes language that will mandate the outsourcing of engineering, design, surveying and mapping services and presumably all related support services. Sections 1717A and 1707 can be found at the following link on page 220 (engineering and design services) and page 211 (for surveying and mapping) of the House STA.

View the House Resolution here.

NASHTU has been working to strike both sections from the STA and will continue to do so. But we need your help TODAY!!!

Contact your state's Congressional Delegation immediately and ask them to oppose the language in Sections 1717A and 1707. Forcing states to outsource their engineering, design, surveying and mapping services infringes on a state department of transportation's ability to decide how to best deliver its transportation system. It would also force states to spend billions of federal dollars on over-priced, non-competitively bid engineering services contracts throughout the United States. Billions of dollars that would be far better spent on actually building or repairing highways, bridges, and other critically needed transportation infrastructure.

NASHTU has drafted the attached opposition letter for you to send to your state's Congressional Delegation. Please customize the letter for your union and fax or e-mail it right away.

Please don't stop there. This issue also requires phone calls and in-person meetings with your Congressional Representatives to stress the dangers of Sections 1717A and 1707A and to call for their immediate removal from the House STA. Attached are talking points for your use during your conversations with Members of your state's Congressional Delegation.

Visit the communications/NASHTU folder for these letters.
